Hey everyone,
I’m planning to run a Minecraft server from my home computer, but I’m concerned about my IP being exposed and the risk of DDoS attacks. I’ve been looking into using Velocity as a proxy and wanted to see if this setup would effectively protect my home network. I want to launch a Minecraft server and how a powerful spare pc to run the server 24/7.
My Plan:
- Host a Velocity proxy on a paid server host (either a small VPS or a dedicated game host).
- Route all player connections through the Velocity proxy, so my home IP stays hidden.
- Run my actual Minecraft server on my home PC and configure it to only accept connections from the Velocity proxy.
- Set up firewall rules on my home network to block all external traffic except from the proxy’s IP.
- Use Velocity’s forwarding secret and enable player-info-forwarding-mode: modern for security.
My Questions:
- Is this setup secure? Would my home IP remain hidden from players?
- Could someone still find my real IP somehow? Are there any security risks I might be overlooking?
- Would this protect me from DDoS attacks, or would attackers still be able to affect my home network in some way?
- Any other recommendations for making my setup as safe as possible?
